Give us a bit of detail about yourself – background, profession, how you got into filmmaking and your current role
I’m Davyfrsh, born on the beautiful Island of Jamaica, I found my love for the arts at the age of 16, after getting my first camera. I began experimenting in the world of photography, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Production at the University of the West Indies.
After graduating, I furthered my craft by working as a Multimedia Designer and later leaving that role to pursue my passions as a Creative Director, Director, Cinematographer (http://thefrshcreative.com/)
Since then, I have worked on various projects with Clients such as Protoje, Lila Ike, Charly Black, Yaksta, I-Octane, Skillibeng, Jords, Govana, Aidonia, Romain Virgo, The Nue Co., and many others. I would describe my style as editorial, fused with culture and color.
Tell us about your film – how did it come about?
This music video is about coming from a life of little and learning how to be innovative with the little you have to multiple into something big with investments and agriculture.
How did you find out about FilmConvert?
I found FilmConvert a couple years ago when I wanted that 35mm vintage look with one simple click and colors I wanted, I first did some research on youtube watching tutorials about the plugin before I downloaded the trailer then soon after buying it for Premiere Pro.
Why did you decide to use FilmConvert for this particular project?
I always grade with FilmConvert it’s the secret ingredient to my film sauce and the ability to tweak the film stocks and color how I see fit I’m always able to make it how I want to fit my film.
What was the particular look or style you were going for with your film?
For this music video I wanted vintage creamy highlights mix with contrasty mid tones especial in the skin.
Tell us about your workflow. What settings, film stock, camera profiles and tweaks did you use in FilmConvert?
I work in Adobe Premiere Pro (Cut and Color Grade) after I color correct all clips individually an adjustment layer is places over the timeline.
Then I use FilmConvert to finalize my grading process which is tweaked based on darker clips thus adjustment layer is cut into sessions and color coded for darker clips vs brighter.
For this Film I used Blackmagic cinema 6k camera shot in 6k(2:4:1) Raw 8:1 after importing clips I color correct all clips and apply a basic LUT built into the BRAW data.
Then in FilmConvert * adjustment layer, I used the default camera setting, temperature 33+, tint 0, film stock KD 5207 Vis3 (chroma, luma 100%), film size 35mm, size 4, softness 0, strength ( 100% on b-roll / 16% on performance shots), highlights pushed to creamy yellow in the color wheels.
However on the song outro shot around the dinner table, the temperate 15+ and highlight on color wheel reset to normal because that scene was shot warmer in camera.
What other effects or tweaking did you use?
Never have use any other effects or tweak, once I used FilmConvert I get the look I want always.
