The Water Sommelier

Martin Riese is a water sommelier, which, despite what your brain might be telling you right now, is a real thing. Riese is perhaps the most well known of a very small pool of water sommeliers around the world who have made a profession of tasting, analyzing, judging, and ultimately spreading the good word about the many different flavors of water our tastebuds have been missing out on. For this film, we followed Martin from his home at the Patina Restaurant in Los Angeles to the first of its kind water competition and trade show in Guangzhou, China. Why? “Because water is not just water.”

The Ways of Faith

With 170 years of tradition, the Pilgrimage of The Divine Eternal Father is considered the largest feast dedicated to the Holy Trinity throughout the world, which makes the city of Trindade, in the metropolitan region of Goiânia, a special place: The Capital of Faith in the state of Goiás. The devotees go on pilgrimage from different places in the country with a single destination: the "Basilica do Divino Pai Eterno". There they seek meaning for life, relief for the pains or simply thank the received Graces. The pilgrims make the route on foot, a route with 18 km between Goiânia and Trindade.

The Wedding Day Of Hayley & Dominik

Let's meet Hayley & Dominik who decided to pledge their love in Fara Church (Poznan, Poland).
They are a great couple! Their family and friends from all over the world made us feel very welcome there.
We didn't just set up the camera on a tripod in the corner; we nearly lost our breath looking for the best shots of this wonderful event, but luckily we got saved by one of the guests with a mug of beer :)! And here it is - the highlights of this amazing wedding in a magnificent Biedrusko Palace! Enjoy!

The Weekend Beekeeper

Our friend Jes is a talented photographer who happens to be a beekeeper on her spare time. She asked us if we wanted to come and film her bees. We then decided to turn this into a little doco. This was originally prompted by the fact that bees were recently declared the most important living beings on this planet. Thus was filmed in the Blue Mountains, close to Sydney, Australia.

The Weight of Mountains

This is a short film about the processes by which mountains are created and eventually destroyed. It is based upon the work of British geographer L. Dudley Stamp, and was shot in Iceland.

Physical geography and geology is an enormous and fascinating subject, and this film only touches upon the surface of the discipline. For those who wish to further advance their knowledge in this field, additional reading and research is recommended.

The film was created as part of The Weight of Mountains filmmaker residency program. For more information please visit http://www.twom.is/

Thirty Two Miles

Driver / Director / Editing / Cinematography by Michael Racanelli
All Music Composed and Arranged by Matthew James

I shot this as an experiment while driving to see if I could collect footage and edit together a loose storyline out of it. It was shot in the dead of winter in the midwest at night, so I really wanted to bring out the overall cold color instead of the yellow overhead freeway lamps, as well as the grain of winter.

Editing on a friend's machine, I was able to use FilmConvert Pro with the Kodak Vision 3 5207 stock to capture that look that was best for the story.

This Could Be Your Last Ride

Patrick Bracelin has been my best friend since college. We did an initial interview with Patrick which quickly turned into, what I would consider, one of my favorite things I've captured on video.

We made the haul to Phoenixville, PA from the DC area for the additional shots we wanted to lay over the video that we had already edited featuring Patrick's interview. This is one of the first interviews I've ever done, and topping this experience will be quite the challenge in the foreseeable future.

Patrick still rides and plans on riding as much as possible. The only difference being either on a track or in the woods now that all of his street bikes have been sold. Bad habits don't have to define your passion. Do what you love even if it may kill you. Life is short, make it count.

This Film Used to Be About Rum

In Cold War-times, Cuba racked up a debt with what was then called Czecholslavakia. Since then, the Soviet Union collapsed, Czechoslovakia became the Czech Republic, and Cuba stood frozen in time. That Soviet-era debt survives though, and negotiations have recently surfaced for Cuba to repay that debt in rum. According to The Guardian, 130 years worth. Of rum. That’s a fun story, right? We thought so too. So we went to Cuba to tell it, and learned that you can’t just make a puff piece in an active military dictatorship.

This Land

A cheese-maker’s recipe and process is a closely-guarded secret. Internationally renowned Quicke’s contacted me under a veil of secrecy and told me of the imminent launch of their new-recipe clothbound cheese. The introduction of a new ingredient, Cornish Sea Salt, was a really big deal. In close collaboration with Quicke’s I created ‘This Land’ a poetry-driven brand film and a series of four recipe films with Cornwall chef Ben Quinn. The content series is designed to knit together the fabric of the Quicke’s and Cornish Sea Salt brands to celebrate and promote this ‘new wave’ in cheese making.

My first trip to Vietnam, to this land which is a part of me.
Places visited: Halong Bay, Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Saigon, the Mekong delta, Phan Tiet.

" We’re on the 24th of December, here it is, I’m finally in Vietnam. We just landed in Hanoi, capital of the country. It’s a first for me, I’m with my family, with my father who left this country at the age of 18. Since I was a little boy, I dream about making this trip with them, with him. After several hours on a local bus on his way to the East, we are boarding on a junk, heading for the bay of Halong. I’m in the middle of this bay and the sight of these hills tearing open the sea through this mist fascinates me. It’s Christmas Eve, but my mind is elsewhere, being here is my gift.

The next day we are back on the road to the South, and will succeed to each other Hu? and its Imperial city, the astonishing and preserved village of Hoi Han and finaly H? Chí Minh, said Saigon. This last, megalopolis with i

The land is not like it once was, however, and the current state of the glades is compared to the historical plight of the Miccosukee and all Native Americans.
