By MADE DENNY CHRISNAPengerupukan day takes place every 420 days, which is on the ninth dark moon of Bali’s lunar calendar. It is a day when every village on Bali will do sacrification rituals to neutralize the negative energy. It usually takes place on the main crossroad of the village which is believed to be the zero spot of the balance. The negative energy which is represented as Evil will be invited and assembled, the youths will create a figure of evil or giants for months as the negative energy symbol. They will carry the figure of evil or giants around the village to invite all negative to the centre of rituals where they will be peaced or be neutralized in order to not disturb the peacefulness of the people’s life. The Pengerupukan is done one day before the Saka new year or The Silent Day where Balinese people do four prohibitions to appreciate the nature as well as to do self-control for one day (24 hours) starting from 6 am to 6 am of the next day. During this time, it is very quiet on the stre

ABLF covers uniforms, school supplies, books, basic health care, eyeglasses for poor vision, wheelchairs for those with mobility issues, and they monitor academic progress monthly throughout the school year as well as provide counseling to address any domestic concerns. By Jacopo CampaiolaAfter 28 years working as a Mountain Rescue, my Father retired. This is a short documentary about his career, his experiences and about a job of which the details are not well known to many. I have, myself, learned a lot during the two days while making this portrait. The joys of having a job that was more a passion than work, the strong bonds made over the years, but also the risks and the emotional impact of some of the missions. So, here is a short and condensed piece about a career that is, to me, extraordinary; of a humble and courageous man that I call my Dad.
By Florent PiovesanMartin Riese is a water sommelier, which, despite what your brain might be telling you right now, is a real thing. Riese is perhaps the most well known of a very small pool of water sommeliers around the world who have made a profession of tasting, analyzing, judging, and ultimately spreading the good word about the many different flavors of water our tastebuds have been missing out on. For this film, we followed Martin from his home at the Patina Restaurant in Los Angeles to the first of its kind water competition and trade show in Guangzhou, China. Why? “Because water is not just water.”
By David FreidNorway wants to give Finland a mountain for its birthday. Bjørn Geirr Harsson is facing an uphill legal battle for an arctic mountain-sized birthday present between neighboring countries. Bjørn, a retired geophysicist of the Norwegian Mapping Authority, had an idea to fix an anomaly along the border between Norway and Finland, and give Finland what would be its tallest mountain for it’s 100th birthday. Considering the tumultuous history of international boundaries, this would be an unprecedented show of kindness between countries. But how exactly does one give away a mountain?
By David FreidLast year, we visited a theme park celebrating America’s mythic Wild West in wintery Sweden that became a welcoming home for refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war: vimeo.com/melfilms/highchaparral As strange as that sounds, this was a pretty good deal for about 500 people looking to start a new life. But with global political winds shifting toward isolationism, the Wild West response to a refugee crisis only lasts so long. We went back to see how the West was lost.
By David FreidSevnica, the small medieval town in Slovenia where Melania Trump grew up, is officially open for business. That’s because, in many ways, our new First Lady is their new First Lady too. And now it seems the whole country is talking about their favorite daughter. Slovenia couldn't be further removed from her husband's vision for America, but Slovenians across the country are embracing The Donald and making preparations for a boom in tourism that, if all goes as planned, should start any moment now. If you try not to get too partisan for about 20 minutes, FIRST LADYLAND will make you smile bigly. But if we go missing, please check our coffee for cyanide.
By David Freid"They say that when you're hit by the polar bug, you never leave." Don't say we didn't warn you. Nobody dies in Longyearbyen, or so goes the rumor. We went to the northernmost city in the world to find out why, and stumbled into the first act of a science fiction flick about something deadly, long buried in the permafrost.
